Dreams in the Rat House by

Shannon and the Clams

2013

Highlights:

  • Rip Van Winkle

  • Ozma

  • Unlearn

Hands down, Shannon and the Clams is easily one of my favorite contemporary groups. Lead vocalist, Shannon Shaw has one of the most impressive voices presently. You can easily liken her sound, and by proxy the group to levels of The Primettes (Diana Ross pre Supremes, Tears of Sorrow is an amazing track), Ronnie Spector/The Ronnettes, the early Shirelles and tinges of Mama Cass. It is truly unfair though to solely lump Shaw and the Clams, as they effortlessly combine soul, doo wop, surf and acid rock into a whimsical, heartfelt journey.

The vocal interplay of Shannon Shaw and Cody Blanchard combined with shimmering guitar runs are seamless on this album. They transport you into the vibe and emotion of each track that makes you feel strange and at home all at the same time.

Hopefully, with some normalcy returning to the world, we will find  tour from Shannon and the Clams (okay, I am being selfish, I was supposed to see them locally last year for my birthday weekend, but being an April baby, the pandemic had other plans for me).
